Funeral Service ~ Agnes Sayer
Passed away at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at the age of 93 years, Agnes Elaine Sayer (nee Reid), formerly of Ninette, MB.
Born on July 20, 1932, in Verwood, Saskatchewan, Agnes (Aggie, Mom, Grandma etc.) grew up near Wawanesa, Manitoba. She had such fun with her brother Albert (Bud) and then a baby sister, Eleanor. In 1953, she married Terry Schroeder. They moved to Hilton, where they operated a mixed farm and raised livestock. In 1954, they were blessed with the birth of a little girl, Judy and in 1956, their second daughter, Jenny was born. Terry and Agnes separated in 1963 and divorced in 1965.
In February 1966, Agnes married Dave Sayer, originally from Holland, Manitoba but living and working at Metals Industries in Brandon. That spring, they purchased a farm near Ninette and started up a mixed farming operation. In 1968, Bonnie was born with Peggy following closely behind in 1969.
Dave and Agnes continued farming, along with the help of Eugene Spurrill, who worked on the farm for more than 20 years. Agnes milked Jersey cows and had a cream quota for many years. She would sell ice-cream pails of Jersey milk to neighbours and friends in Ninette. Agnes baked her own bread and churned her own butter during her time on the farm. She was known for her delicious cinnamon buns. Although starting to reduce their livestock, Dave and Agnes lived happily on the farm until Dave's death in 2006.
In the fall of 2009, Agnes moved into Ninette where she spent many happy years. In 2023, she moved to Cherry Creek Place in Boissevain where she was blessed with support from wonderful new friends. She stayed in Boissevain until her move to the Wawanesa Personal Care Home in 2024. She loved reconnecting with many lifelong friends in Wawanesa.
Agnes was very proud of her 4 girls, 11 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She would rave about their musical talents, their educational achievements and their adventures travelling and working all over the world.
Agnes was a depression-era baby. She was taught that everything could become something beautiful or useful. She was ahead of her time when it came to recycling and repurposing. She cared about the land and the environment and saw the importance of taking care of it for future generations.
Agnes had an unparalleled love for horses and was involved with training, showing, and breeding purebred Palominos. At the age of 80, she even rode a horse in the Ninette Parade. This was something that she was very proud of.
Boston Terrier dogs were also a passion for Agnes. She spent many years raising and breeding purebred Bostons, whom she loved dearly. She made connections all across Western Canada with her Bostons.
Agnes was heavily involved with 4-H, the Pelican Lake Agricultural Society, and various other community events. She was a very fun-loving person who loved to plan and host birthday parties for her girls that were a true highlight for many children in Ninette. They would always include cake with coins and an elaborate treasure hunt with a bag of marshmallows tucked deep into the heart of a bale stack. She was like a second Mom to her children's friends. With her big kind heart, she would make sure they had warm mittens and good socks and underwear.
Mom enjoyed gardening and would share seeds and tips for success with anyone she met. She also loved cooking and baking and could often be found writing out recipes with handwriting that stayed beautiful to her final days. She also enjoyed attending old time music jamborees, and when in the care home, she particularly enjoyed when musicians came to perform - organized by the “Wawanesa PCH Activities” coordinator.
Agnes spent her final days surrounded by loving family members, with comforting visits from friends, and compassionate care provided by the wonderful caregivers at Wawanesa PCH. She will be forever loved and missed.
Agnes leaves to mourn her passing her three daughters Judy (Dennis) MacKenzie of Vermillion Bay, ON, Bonnie Shaw of Ottawa, ON, Peggy (Ed) Symons of Port Williams, NS; eleven grandchildren, Dawna (Brad), Joni (Nick), Stacy (Jon), Michael, Crystal (Mike), Sophia, Sara, Mollie, Chloe, Ben and Ainslie; four great grandchildren Dawson, Rylie, Carlyn, & Izabel, and by a sister Eleanor (Paul) Vanwynsberghe of Brandon, MB as well as numerous nieces & nephews.
Agnes was predeceased by her husband Dave (2006), daughter Jenny Schroeder, son-in-law Martin Shaw, parents Bob & Marian Reid and by brother & sister-in-law Albert & Marlene Reid.
Funeral service will be held in the Willmor Chapel, Glenboro, MB, on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 1:00 pm with Logan Teetaert officiating. Interment will take place at approx. 2:15 pm in the Ninette Cemetery. Following the interment, a reception will be held in the Ninette Community Hall. Everyone is welcome.
