Alice Doreen Acorn (nee Myers) of Glenboro, MB, passed away peacefully at her residence on Monday, December 19th, 2022, at the age of 99 years.
Doreen was born in the fall of 1923, near Belmont, MB at the farm home of her parents, George and Mattie Myers. She was the second child in a family that would grow to include nine children.
Large families were typical back then, and she was part of a close-knit clan where everyone pulled together in tough times and made the most of what they had. She cared for younger siblings and learned to cook, sew, tend the garden, and much more; these were lessons that prepared her well for life later as a wife, homemaker and mother.
Doreen married Bob Acorn Nov. 5, 1941, on her eighteenth birthday. They began married life on his home farm and moved to another farm known as the “Kinley Place” in 1943. Clearing and farming the land and improving buildings was back-breaking work over the years, but they made the best of it.
Together, they raised 4 children and welcomed many grandchildren. Doreen was a skilled homemaker and her family say her baking and needlework were legendary. While doing her part on the farm Doreen also worked outside the home, helping others with decorating and selling Avon products. She also worked part-time at the training center in Ninette and managed the general store at Pleasant Valley during the summer, where cottagers couldn’t get enough of her homemade bread.
In 1982, after their family had grown and the farm was sold, they retired to a quieter life in the village of Belmont and in later years to Glenboro. They enjoyed playing cards, fishing, golfing and traveling in their retirement years.
After Bob’s passing in 2020, Doreen remained interested and curious about life around her. She continued to enjoy baking and knitting for family, friends and charity until her final day of life.
Doreen leaves to mourn her passing five generations of descendants - her three children, Helen Maloney of Baldur, MB, Brent (Gerri) Acorn of Winnipeg, MB, Jo Ann Doughart (Ian) of Summerside PEI; eight grandchildren, Brenda (Norbert) Lussier, Coreen Watson, Chris Acorn, Scott Acorn, Derek (Erin) Acorn, Shawna (Curtis) Acorn, Jackson Doughart, Olivia Doughart, eleven great grandchildren, twelve great great grandchildren & two great great great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brothers Harvey (May) Myers of Killarney, MB, Dennis (Jessie) Myers of Belmont, MB, brothers-in-law Arnie Egge of Kimberley, BC and Jim Williamson of Belmont, MB as well as extended relatives.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband Bob in 2020, son Vern, son-in-law George Maloney, parents George & Mattie Myers, brothers Calvin (Marlene), Lloyd (Shirley), sisters Audrey Williamson, Gladys (Fred) Bell, Shirley Egge, Evelyn (Russ) Chambers.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Willmor Chapel on Saturday January 7, 2023 at 1 pm with Sharon Hamilton officiating.
