Celebration of Life - Ellen Viide

Passed away at the Deloraine Health Centre on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the age of 76 years, Ellen Marie Viide of Cypress River, MB.

Ellen Bate was born on March 11, 1947, in Portage La Prairie, MB.  She was the first child of Walter & Isabelle (DeGueldre) Bate, an older sister to Garry (Karen) Bate, Brenda (Barry) Stephenson, Brian Bate (deceased).   She grew up and attended Castle Hill School Castle Point, MB.  After completing high school, she moved to Brandon to work.  She met and married Edwin Mitchler June 25, 1966, moved to Waldersee where they started their family, they purchased a farm west of Glenella where they raised their children Darcy (Tracy) Mitchler – Brookdale MB, Dana (Sam) Boryskiewich, - Angusville MB, David (Laura) Mitchler – Rocky Mountain House AB, Jon Mitchler (Paula Vassa) – Cypress River MB, and Shawne (deceased).

Ellen kept their children and the community children busy, by sharing her talents teaching music and figure skating lessons.  She was often seen on Sunday playing in church, assisting at school concerts.  Playing at numerous socials, weddings, funerals and get together on her own or with their band.  She always had a large garden, sewed many articles – clothing and decorative for her family.  She also had the ability to sell – she sold Amway, Avon, and Tupperware to supplement the farm income and if that didn’t keep her busy enough, she obtained her private pilot’s license.   Ellen loved to cook and socialize, so it was only fitting for her to open Ellen’s Café in Glenella. Not just a regular menu, she would create her own version of menu items – including the Mexican hat – Donut, ice cream and sauce!

She found new renters for the restaurant when her marriage ended, Jon, Dana and Ellen moved to Winnipeg.  She continued to work in the food industry until 1985 when she went back to school – Herzing Institute to obtain her Doctor’s Office Assistant Degree.  Working in this field was not her passion so she returned to the food industry working at various restaurants in MB.  Ellen was always willing to try new adventures, in 1988 she moved to SK where she continued to work in the food industry as well as ventured into bar tending and being a matron for RCMP.

In 1991 she moved to Winnipeg to be closer to Shawne, he was a resident at St. Amart Center.  Here she dabbled in assisting seniors, taxation and retaining her love of cooking at a golf course. In April 1992 she married Einer Viide, in May 1993 they moved to Belmont where she joined her brother Garry and sister Brenda in operating Bate’s motel.  When the hotel was sold in 1996, she took employment at Midwest Foods in Carberry. With marriage ending, she took her restaurant experience and moved to Gladstone.  In 2001 she moved to Brandon where she continued in the food industry until she found her calling at Brandon Community Options.  She thrived on helping the residents, sharing her talents, new experiences, and numerous trips with them.

In 2016 she retired after 12 years at BCO and moved to Cypress River.  Here she kept busy volunteering at the local thrift shop, sewing, fixing, repurposing donated items. Ellen struggled with health issues the last few years.  She passed away on September 2nd, 2023, at Deloraine Hospital.

The family of Ellen would like to express their sincere thanks for all the condolences, flowers, food and support.
