George 'Errol' Weedmark

George “Errol” Weedmark passed away peacefully at Fairview PCH on May 5, 2026, at the age of 73 years old.

 Errol leaves to mourn his younger brother Guy Weedmark, and sister Jo-Ann (Daryl) Makinson, nephew Deklan Makinson and niece Rhianna Makinson all of Brandon MB.  Errol was pre-deceased by his parents John and Betty (nee Couch) Weedmark, sister-in-law Sharon (nee Howell) Weedmark and infant nephew Adam Makinson.

Due to complications at birth Errol was born with Cerebral Palsy and faced many challenges throughout his life. At a time when expectations for children with disabilities were often limited, Errol proved what determination and resilience could accomplish.

John and Betty lived in Glenboro MB at the time of Errol’s birth and in 1954 they moved to Baldur MB where Errol started school. In 1962 the family moved to Glenora MB where many fond family memories were made. In 1965 they settled in Belmont where Errol completed his Grade 8 education, thanks in large part to the dedication and encouragement of his mom Betty. Despite learning difficulties, frequent absences due to numerous surgeries and hospital stays throughout his childhood, Errol persevered.

As a young man Errol moved to Brandon and attended CAMROC (now COR enterprises) – the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded. It was an organization that provided vocational training & employment for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Although this program was not the right fit for Errol, he soon found meaningful work as a custodian at the YMCA. Over the next 23 years he became a familiar and valued member of the YMCA community. In recognition of his dedication and service, Errol was awarded the Governor Generals Good Citizen Award in 1993.

Errol retired from the YMCA in 1995 but continued to volunteer for numerous charities around Brandon such as the MS Society, the Cerebral Palsy Big Bike race and the Counselling Centre for Hope Healing and Encouragement.

Throughout his life, Errol was blessed with the kindness of many people who helped him maintain his independence. He “boarded” over the years with caring families, notably Mrs. Monk and Mrs. Dubyts whose support allowed him to remain an active member of the community. In the early 1990’s Errol moved into his own suite at Princess Towers in Brandon, where he enjoyed the independence of living on his own.

In 2002, following his mom Betty’s severe stroke, Errol moved to Baldur Personal Care Home to be close to her while he received additional care himself.

Once Betty passed in 2009 Errol returned to Brandon to Fairview Personal Care home where he could remain engaged in community life.

For many years, Errol could be seen around Brandon on his scooter, always on the move and happy to stop for a conversation. One of Errol’s greatest sources of purpose was Volunteering at the MCC Thrift store.

Errol loved his Country and Western music. He especially enjoyed spending time with the Fugitives band, attending dances throughout the area and selling CD’s at their performances.

Errol will be remembered for his perseverance and determination to live life on his terms despite the obstacles he faced.

Thank you to all the staff at Fairview for the compassionate care, friendship and support they provided Errol over the years. Special thanks to the folks at the MCC Thrift Store for giving him purpose, belonging, and fulfillment in the later chapter of his life.

A graveside service will be held on June 6th,2026 at 1:00 pm at Neelin Cemetery followed by a gathering at the Belmont Hall. Everyone is welcome.
