Celebration of Life ~ Georgina Gullett

With full hearts and sadness, we announce the passing of Georgina Gullett, who left us peacefully on September 26th at the age of 95 years.  She was a wonderful mother, loving grandmother, an extra special great-grandma, and a true friend to those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Georgina was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Bill Gullett, parents, Ed and Mae Scott, her sisters Ruby (Les Armstrong), Reta (Keith Kellett), Edna (Glen Mossing), and Laverne (Scotty Dryden), her sister-in-law Eva Eastley (Orville Martin/Bill Eastley) and other extended family members. Georgina is survived by her children Teresa Powell (Perry), Wayne Gullett (Valerie), and Ron Gullett (Amy), as well as seven Grandchildren Katie Missinne (Brad), Lindsey Gullett (LeeAnne), Adam Powell (Rozane), Vanessa Powell (Nick Wong), Victoria Gullett, Alexis Gullett, and Halle Gullett (Maddox Juntunen), and five great-grandchildren, Logan and Ledger Gullett, Kinley, Remy, and Bridger Missinne, to whom she was known fondly as “Grandma George,” and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.

Georgina was born in Killarney, MB on June 26th, 1930. She was the youngest of five girls in the Scott family and grew up swimming in the lake and playing sports.  Georgina graduated from Killarney School in 1948 and worked for B.T. Lawrence at Lawrence’s Hardware store for the next 11 years. She loved to travel with her girlfriends and often told us stories of trips to Victoria Beach on the train, and Long Island, California with her best girlfriends. Georgina was a proud life-long Anglican who was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Killarney, MB. She taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir, which led to a number of solo performances at local weddings. Georgina had a zest for fun and adventure from a young age that she never lost throughout her life.

In 1958 she married Bill Gullett and they lived in Killarney for one year before moving to the Gullett farm south of Wawanesa. Georgina was an avid gardener, baker, and cook, who made many wonderful meals for her family over the years. Georgina enjoyed curling and was an active member of the Wawanesa Curling Club well into her senior years. She loved a good bonspiel from time to time, and always had fun wherever she was! She was very proud of her daughter, Teresa, for becoming a nurse, and she loved following all of the hockey and ball played by Wayne and Ron over the years.  As her kids grew up and had their own families, Georgina beautifully stepped into the role of Grandma and took great interest in everything her grandkids did. She loved following their sports and activities, making many trips to Bottineau and Calgary to keep up with all of her family’s events. The Christmas holidays was where Georgina spent the most hours, readying for family to come home and decorating her beautiful house - always to be done by December 13th so she could call the neighbours over for Bill’s birthday party. No matter how many people “called in,” she was always ready and put on a wonderful spread.  Georgina always knew how to make you feel special.

In 2003, Georgina moved from the farm into a house in Wawanesa. Shortly after this, her husband Bill passed away. This was a tough transition for Georgina, as Bill was the steady hand that anchored her for so many years. However, through the love of her close friends and family, Georgina continued to enjoy the things that she loved, be it a trip to the casino, tending to her flowers, a game of bingo, having a coffee with the girls, or a good happy hour with a caesar and a cigarette!

In 2016, Georgina entered care at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home. For nine years she received wonderful care from the nurses and aides at the facility. For the past few years, her family referred to her as “The Captain” since she was the longest surviving resident until her death. Georgina was an independent woman until the end, never shying away from speaking what was on her mind, and always had a comment for her caregivers, appropriate or not!  Whether Georgina would admit it, the PCH gave her a consistent quality of life that allowed her to enjoy her life to the fullest. Her favourite moments were when her family visited her, but most of all, her great grandkids. She always let them play with her jewellery and she always had a little treat for them to enjoy. Georgina would often put on a funny hat or show them a picture of her as a young woman and tell them a story that would make them giggle. The visit would be topped off by her giving them rides on her walker down the hallway towards the door.

Sadly, Georgina’s independence got the best of her when she suffered a fall and traumatic injury to her elbow. She required surgery and put up a tough fight, but in the end it was too difficult for a person of her age to overcome such a traumatic event. She passed away peacefully at Tri-Lake Health Centre in Killarney where she received wonderful end of life care and was surrounded by family.

A Celebration of Georgina’s life will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 4th, 2025 at the Wawanesa United Church with Shirley McBurney officiating along with Anglican Ministers from Holy Trinity in Killarney.  A private family interment will take place in the Wawanesa Cemetery. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Wawanesa Community Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests that donations be made to the Wawanesa Personal Care Home, (Activity Department), c/o Box 309, Wawanesa, MB, or to the Wawanesa Community Foundation, Box 89, Wawanesa, MB, R0K 2G0.

Rest in peace, Mom/Grandma
