Harvey Dowd Obituary

Passed away at the Glenboro Health Centre on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the age of 79 years, Harvey Allan Dowd (aka “Rogue”), of Glenboro, MB.

Harvey was born on October 10, 1945, at Blain’s Nursing Home in Glenboro and grew up on the family farm along “Dowd Road” south of Glenboro. He received his education at Glenboro School.

In 1967, Harvey purchased Ivan Nairn’s farm, located three miles east of Glenboro on Highway #2. After marrying Carol in 1969, they made their home there, raising their family and continuing to live on the farm ever since. In 1988, Harvey decided to leave farming, held an auction sale, and began working for the Department of Highways. He first joined the Sealcoat Crew before moving to the Highways Yard in Wawanesa, where he worked until his retirement in 2005.

Throughout his farming years and while raising his children, Harvey was actively involved in the community, particularly in sports. In the early 1970s, he played goalie in a local hockey “liniment league,” earning the nickname "Rogie" after Canadiens’ goalie Rogie Vachon, which eventually became simply “Rogue.” As President of Minor Sports, he played a key role in organizing the installation of artificial ice in the Glenboro Arena. Alongside a friend, he helped establish the Tiger Hills Hockey League, which continues to operate today.

Harvey managed the Glenboro Nordics for several years and was a dedicated supporter of the team. He was well known for his loud cheers and the legendary “Nordic Growl,” which even made appearances at Winnipeg Jets games. He also served as President of the Glenboro Golf Club during the installation of irrigation and the decision to build a new clubhouse. His love for sports extended to organizing a group of friends to form a softball team, “Rogie’s Rovers,” which competed in the local recreational league. He also enjoyed curling and was part of the team that won Baldur’s 100th Anniversary Bonspiel.

Fishing was another passion of Harvey’s, and he spent countless hours casting lines in the Assiniboine River during the summers and ice fishing at Rock and Pelican Lakes in the winters, earning several Master Angler awards. Harvey was also deeply devoted to his family, logging many miles across Manitoba to take his children to ringette and hockey games. As the years passed, he rarely missed a chance to cheer on his grandchildren at their hockey and ball games, always their biggest supporter.

As retirement approached, Harvey decided to take on a new challenge—a big garden. He reclaimed three acres of their yard site, planting fruit trees, saskatoons, raspberries, strawberries, and a variety of vegetables in a large garden. This, along with helping to maintain their 10-acre property, kept him busy.

In his later years, Parkinson’s Plus took away his mobility and made daily activities more challenging. However, he was lovingly cared for by his wife, Carol, with support from family, and enjoyed the companionship of his cats, Ollie and Sammy, who snuggled with him every day.

Harvey is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years Carol (nee Gudnason), son Curt (Shannon) of Brandon, MB-grandchildren Tatiana (Cody), Colin & Jalena (Liam); son Cory (Crystal) of Portage la Prairie, MB-grandchildren Kayley (Dustin), Kianna (Brayden), Trystan and Kaytin; great grandchildren Jaxon & Brooks; daughter Cathy (Amanda) of St. Francis Xavier, MB; brothers Jim (Donna) of Winnipeg, MB, Bryan (Elaine) of Winnipeg, MB and Randy (Leanne) of Neepawa, MB & all their families, by brother-in-law Eric Gudnason of Baldur, MB, as well as numerous extended relatives & friends.

Harvey was predeceased by his sister Judy Dowd, parents Doug & Evelyn (nee McGillivary) and by sister-in-law Ellen Gudnason.

A Celebration of Harvey’s life will be held in the Willmor Chapel, Glenboro, MB, on Monday, July 7, 2025 at 1:00pm with Sharon Hamilton officiating.  Interment will take place in the Grund Cemetery.
