Harvey Victor Hyde

Harvey Victor Hyde passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Treherne Hospital. Born on May 8, 1925 to John and Ferne Hyde (nee Bowles) on the family farm near Silverton, Manitoba, he was the eldest brother to sisters Merna McLeod, and Ruth Pickrell. After turning 18, Harvey was trained as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for 2 ½ years. This was during WW2. Harvey spent 10 months at sea on the HMCS Kincardine. During this time they made 12 North Atlantic crossings escorting convoys of ships between Canada and Britain. The day the war ended in Europe was Harvey's 20th birthday and he was in St. John's Newfoundland. After receiving his honourable discharge from the Navy he farmed with his father. Harvey always enjoyed dancing and at a New Years Eve party he met the love of his life, Mona Robertson. They married on October 30, 1951 and spent many years dancing and enjoying life together. They left the farm in 1957 when Harvey joined Paterson elevators as a grain buyer. They lived in Swan Lake, Somerset and in 1960 moved to Treherne. In 1963, Harvey was appointed Postmaster a position he held until retiring in 1991. Mona and Harvey found it to be a busy life with four sons, Stuart, Murray, Scott, and Fraser; all involved in ball, hockey, curling and of course education. Harvey was active in the Legion. He served as Treasurer when the Legion Lodge was being built. He was very involved with the building of the Delahunt Golf Course and served as treasurer for the first ten years. He was a member of the Treherne Masonic Lodge. In 1974 Harvey was appointed as Justice of the Peace; a position he kept until 2013. Harvey was a volunteer for 25 years on the Treherne Fire department and an early volunteer on the ambulance service. Harvey was always interested in music. He made many, many, good friendships through his love of music, traveling wherever there was music being made. After he turned 50 he learned to play the clarinet, later the saxophone and violin. He was a proud member of the Prairie Red Coat Band for over 30 years. He especially enjoyed playing at the Personal Care Homes in the area, or summer afternoons at the Treherne Fair. In retirement, Harvey's days were full with cross-country skiing, golfing and participating in the Treherne Marathon. He was treasurer for the Senior's Friendship Centre for 12 years. He regularly called in on his ham radio with his call sign VE4KT to stay in touch with his radio friends. He and Mona were able to do much traveling during this period and saw much of Canada. He enjoyed watching his grandkids at the pool, going for a drive in the country with Mona, or sitting for hours on the front step of their home enjoying the day. Always kind and considerate, always thinking of Mona, always a gentleman. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mona, sons Stuart, Murray (Debby), Scott (Marita), Fraser, (Mitchaline), grandchildren Blaire, Blake, Breanne, Nicole, Brayden, Lucas, and sister-in-law Ethel Robertson. Harvey was predeceased by his parents John and Ferne Hyde; sisters Merna McLeod and Ruth Pickrell; brothers-in-law Wes McLeod and Bob Pickrell; brother and sister-in-laws Isabel and Joe Clifford, Mildred and Jack Clifford, Nelson and Winnifred Kreager, Mabel and Howard Paddock and Ross Robertson. Special thanks to Dr. Vorster and the staff at the Tiger Hills Health Centre. Funeral services will be held in the Treherne United Church on Thursday February 15, 2018 at 2 pm with Rev. Chuck Ross officiating. Interment to follow in the Woodlands Cemetery.
