Passed away at the Glenboro Health Centre on Thursday August 17, 2023 at the age of 83 years, Ivan, of Glenboro, MB.
Dad was the oldest of 4 children, Evelyn, Margaret, and Roger. His mom and dad farmed on the family farm just South of Glenboro and Dad worked many hours on the farm with his family. Growing up Dad played baseball with the Canucks and quickly took an interest in curling, attending many bonspiels with his father. In 1963, he met his future wife, Dawn Bryer, when she moved to Glenboro to work at the Royal Bank. Their love quickly blossomed and in 1965 they were married.
Mom and Dad took over the farm from Douglas and Dorothy in 1968.The farm was recognized in 1980 as a century farm and is still being farmed by the family today.
In 1968 their first child Shelley was born, followed by Jim in 1970 and Christine in 1973. Dad was still an active curler, helped coach minor hockey, and volunteered at community projects. There were many memorable Stealer baseball games and gatherings with friends. Many spring break vacations were taken with friends including skiing trips in BC and a memorable Disney Trip with the Tosh’s. There was always a board game, card game, Sardines, or Anti-Anti-I-Over game to be played with the family. His love of games was passed to his children and grandchildren. He showed us how much bonding took place spending this valuable time together.
Dad took pride in his carpentry skills and many renovations were done in the family house by himself. These skills were also put to use helping his children build a cabin and house as well as renovate their homes. He and Mom were also kept busy by a large garden, fruit trees and a well-groomed yard.
In 1998 Mom and Dad retired to town. Dad was still active on the farm, helping with harvest and field work. His love of the outdoors continued in their yard in town, with beautiful flower gardens, a fishpond and a garden.
Throughout his retirement he was also kept busy by his grandchildren. He and Mom spent many hours attending baseball, hockey, rugby, MECCA Productions, volleyball and basketball games. They followed the grandkids all across the province, rarely missing a game. They even rode the team bus a few times to provincial events. Dad was once asked which was better being a dad or grandparent and he smiled and replied “definitely a grandparent”.
Dad became an avid golfer and continued to curl as much as 3-4 days a week. He enjoyed his men’s card nights and also his Tuesday night cards with good friends.
Dad was a quiet man, rarely voicing his opinion out loud, and was very accepting of others. He was a modest, kind man unless you were in a heated card game with him! We will miss him dearly, but will carry on the important family values he taught us
