Jessie Matchett was born and named “Jessica Elizabeth Parsonage” on July 8th, 1923 at Greenway, Manitoba. Jessie passed away on Wednesday August 17th, 2022 at Treherne, Manitoba. A Celebration of her life was held on Tuesday August 23th at the Treherne United Church.
Jessie attended school at Greenway, Baldur and Winnipeg Normal School. She taught school for 7 years until her marriage to Albert Matchett on July 9th, 1949.
She and Albert spent many years on their farm east of Treherne working together and raising their two children, Neil and Lilian. And sometimes, raising as many as 3,000 turkeys at the same time!
In 1976 Albert and Jessie moved to a mobile trailer in Treherne, and in 1992 they moved to the Legion Lodge. During this time, they spent winters in Weslaco Texas, Mesa Arizona and Osoyoos B.C. For health reasons they then moved from the Lodge to the Treherne Personal Care Home; Albert in December, 2011 and Jessie in May, 2013.
In her younger years, Jessie was an active member of East Treherne Hospital Guild, Dove Rebekah Lodge, and Treherne United Church Women. She continued to be a member of the Treherne United Church until her death.
In her past, Jessie enjoyed entertaining, swimming, crocheting, knitting, playing cards, watching T.V. and reading. (She continued to “read” using her CNIB “daisy reader” until her death.) She also enjoyed travelling. She and Albert travelled to many places in North America and also to Hawaii. She said that her favourite trip was to Alaska!
Jessie was predeceased by her son, Neil Earl (1950-2003) and her husband, Albert Arnold (1919-2013). Also, her parents, Lilian (Lodge) & Walter Parsonage; some of her siblings and their spouses: Frank & Joyce, Harry & Dorothy, and Walter; and her in-laws: Margaret Parsonage and Bill Haggerty. Jessie was also predeceased by Albert’s parents, Ethel (Eaton) & Wilbert Matchett and all of Albert’s siblings and their spouses: Elsie & Harold Hooper, Cliff & Leona, George & Nellie, Jim & Catherine, Les & Jean and Ruby & Vic Deshayes.
Jessie will be missed and remembered by: Lilian & Lyle Gaertner from Tisdale, SK; Crystal & Donat, Naomi & Morgan, Tammy & Rod, Bethany & Ryan, Lila & Tyler, and her greatgrandchildren: Andre, Selah; Dominick, Donte, Dawson; and Lilo. And pets Winston and MoMo. She will also be missed and remembered by her sister, Minnie Haggerty, from White Rock B.C.; her brother, Jack, and his wife Lorraine, from Winnipeg, MB; and her sister-in-law, Doris Parsonage, from Brandon, MB. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her caring family at Treherne Personal Care Home.
