Passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at the age of 79 years, Joseph Morris Berry, of Minnedosa, MB formerly of Cypress River, MB.
Joe was born and raised in Cypress River. He received his education at Cypress River School. When he was old enough, he would drive a horse and cutter to school in the winter, and ride bicycles in the summer until school bus service came into effect. When Joe was 7 years old, he was stricken with Polio and was hospitalized in the Childrens Hospital in Winnipeg. Luckily, he recovered well without any serious side effects. After finishing his schooling, he worked for Cypress River Seeds for several winters, cleaning and bagging grain. During the summer months he would work on the farm and help out several neighbouring farmers as well. Joe also worked for Royal Paving and the Highways Department before returning home to the family farm in 1966. Joe took over the farm from his parents, he worked hard and ran a successful cattle and grain operation for many years.
Joe’s first daughter Sabrina was born in 1979, Joe’s second daughter Sara was born in 1987, and third was Melissa in 1989. Joe then married Maria Peltola in 1990.
Joe took great pride in his farm and loved being outdoors. He could spend hours driving around the farm checking the cattle and fences and looking at how the crops were doing. He also loved hunting, fishing and camping. Joe passed on his love for animals, the outdoors and his hard work ethic to his three daughters.
Joe leaves to mourn his passing his daughters Sara (Kevin) Farough of Neepawa, MB and Melissa Lelond of Minnedosa, MB, daughter Sabrina Berry of Sprucewoods, MB, grandchildren Graydee, Will, and Olivia, step mother Jean Cory of Brandon, MB, siblings Barb Bloomfield of Chatham, ON, Roseanne (Trevor) Wood of Airdrie, AB, Barry Berry of Brandon, MB, sister-in-law Liisa (Mike) Gatenby, and niece Laura Gatenby, as well as extended family & friends
Joe was predeceased by his wife Maria (nee Peltola), father Percy Berry & mother Alma Jones (nee Reid) and by brother-in-law Bert Bloomfield.
A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the Cypress River United Church with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Interment will take place in the Glencoe Cemetery.
