Mel was born on March 24, 1932 and grew up on a farm in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. He helped out on the farm growing up and then started working for Federated Co-op in Saltcoats. Dad and Mom were married on December 7, 1955 and started their family right away, welcoming Keith in 1956, Colleen in 1958 and Donna in 1960.
In January 1967 Dad accepted a transfer to Treherne Coop as the manager and the move was made. Dad enjoyed working for the Coop and especially loved the customers and the people he worked with. But deep down he always wanted to own his own business, so a few years later he and mom purchased Stuart’s Men’s Wear store in Treherne. After several years they expanded by purchasing Nonie’s Dress Shop and built a new building in Treherne in 1976 known as “Mel’s Mens and Ladies Wear and Family Footwear”. Dad and Mom worked side by side in the store together until retirement.
Dad was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family unconditionally and was proud of each and every one.
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Woodlands Cemetery on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 with Heather Grobb officiating. Following the interment, a Celebration of Mel’s life and reception will be held at 2:00 pm at the Treherne Delahunt Golf Club. Everyone is welcome attend.
