Passed away at the Tiger Hills Health Centre on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at the age of 79, Rene Denis Aubry, of Cypress River, MB.
Rene “Porky” Aubry’s (1944-2024) memory will be cherished by his wife of 58 years, Laurette (nee Lombaert), daughter Bev (Ian) Hutchison of Oakbank, MB, son Jarret (Christie) of Winnipeg, MB, as well as two grandchildren Zachary & Hannah. Dad is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Leslie of Holland, MB, sisters-in-law Jeannette (Gary) Gillis of Winnipeg, MB, Betty (Ken) Lalonde of Glenboro, MB, Loraine Cramer of Baldur, MB, brother-in-law Gary (Elvie) Lombaert of Winnipeg, MB as well as numerous nieces, nephews & extended relatives.
He was predeceased by his parents John & Emma Aubry, brother George (Nellie) Aubry and by brother-in-law Lawrence Leslie.
Dad was born on December 15/44 the youngest of John and Emma’s children. Born and raised near Cypress River his entire life, Dad attended Richmond Hill School followed by Cypress School. He married his sweetheart on June 25/66 and together they built a lifetime of partnership, not only in marriage but in farming and later purchasing the Cypress Meat Market. For twenty five years of ownership, Dad’s craft of sausage making unfolded until he decided life was best lived on the farm. Mom and Dad returned to the family farm and in 2014, moved to town to enjoy a life of semi-retirement.
In addition to being a proud father, father-in-law and grandfather, Dad’s community was his heart and soul. He proudly strove to make “The Best Little Town on the Prairie” a better place by carrying out a number of roles including sitting on the town board, volunteering as a fire fighter and later as fire chief (where he was instrumental in the build of a new fire hall), and as a school bus driver for over 30 years (how he loved his kids!). But probably our family’s favorite memory of Dad serving his community would begin in November where the phone would start to ring about booking Santa Claus for the upcoming holiday season, a role that came so naturally to him with his jolly laugh and twinkling eyes.
An animated character from the get go, relationships meant everything to Dad and those he developed via golfing, curling, and catcher for the Comets (and later for the Glenboro-Cypress River Combines) were especially important to him. His social circle was wide and varied, absent of judgment and accepting of all. Known and remembered for his infectious laughter and warm, inviting smile, Dad’s memory will be deeply stored in all of our hearts.
A Celebration of Rene’s life will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00am in the Willmor Chapel, Glenboro, MB, with Sharon Hamilton officiating.
Following the service, a reception will be held in the Cypress River Memorial Hall. Everyone is welcome.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff of Tiger Hills Health Centre and home care staff who compassionately cared for Dad. He enjoyed sharing laughter with each and every one of you.
Memorial donations can be made in Rene’s memory to the Cypress River & Area Foundation, Box 86, Cypress River, MB or to the Cypress River Fire Department, Cypress River, MB, R0K 0P0.
