Live Stream ~ Funeral for Robert Hayward

Passed away at the Tiger Hills Manor on Sunday December 31, 2023 at the age of 87 years, Robert Ernest Hayward, of Treherne, MB.

Robert was the second son, in a family of six children, born to Nelson & Jessie (Wilks) Hayward on December 24, 1936. He was raised on the family farms: first north of Rathwell and later northwest of Treherne near the Assiniboine River.  He attended Gordon Union and Wilson Glen country schools and later Treherne School.

Robert helped on the family farm and while attending school in Treherne did chores before and after school for Eric Green.  As a young man he travelled to Red Lake Ontario and worked for Labinne Brothers Diamond Drillers at the gold mine in Cochenour; and then for Canadian National Telegraph in Ontario. He returned to Treherne to farm and rented and eventually purchased land from Cliff Stinson.  This became the family farm.

Robert married June Robertson on August 6, 1960, and they have three daughters; Lauree in 1964, Coral Lynn in 1966, and Glenda in 1975.  Robert & June built their family home and yard from the ground up.  They had a huge garden that they both took great pride in, and which provided many fresh fruits and vegetables for their family and guests. There was always room for one more around the table and never a shortage of roast beef, potatoes and gravy, and pie.

Robert was no stranger to hard work and was dedicated to the farming life.  He was a good steward of the land and had an eye for poker straight rows in the field and in the garden long before GPS.  They had cattle for many years and also had a school bus route.  Robert enjoyed operating a bulldozer and eventually purchased one to clear some land.  While he was clearing land in the river flat he found a nice strip of flat land right along the river that he thought would make a great camping spot.  He cleared it, planted grass and this became the site of many camping trips.  His children and especially his grandchildren have many memories of the time spent there and it remains a favorite spot. This was where Robert relaxed and was happy.

Family and extended family were very important to Robert.  He was his happiest when the house was full and he was behind the bar or carving the turkey; or when we gathered at the campground at the river with our aunts and uncles and cousins around the picnic table or the campfire.

Robert enjoyed playing baseball when he was young and playing billiards between school bus runs in the winter.  He was a faithful subscriber of the Co-operator and looked forward to its arrival every week.   He was an avid hunter and especially looked forward to the moose and elk hunting trips up north with friends.  He also enjoyed fishing, and although he didn’t have too many opportunities to return to Red Lake due to the farming life, Red Lake remained one of his favorite places. After retirement Robert enjoyed watching curling on the TV.

Robert & June retired in the Fall of 2000 and moved to town in 2013.  In February 2019 when his health was failing, and he was no longer able to be at home he moved into the Tiger Hills personal care home.

Robert leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife June (nee Robertson), daughters Lauree (Randy) Warren of Treherne, MB, Coral (Garry) Jones also of Treherne, MB & Glenda Hayward of Winnipeg, MB; grandchildren Bobby (Aleks), Reid (Kayla) & Jennelle (Cody); great grandchildren Carter, Jack, Myles, Kylie, Lilly & Brock.

He is also survived by his sisters Frances Litton of Portage la Prairie, MB, Lorraine Stinson of Treherne, MB & Barb (Harold) Connell of Red Deer, AB, brother Clifford (Lynn) of MacGregor, MB, in-laws Helen (Barry) Stanton & Wayne (Lois) Robertson of Treherne, MB as well as numerous extended relatives.

Robert was predeceased by his parents Nelson & Jessie (nee Wilks), brother Wilbert & sister-in-law Joan Hayward, brother-in-law Don Stinson, niece Patricia Dawn Scott & nephew Patrick Dean Scott and by in-laws Merton & Nora Robertson.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 11:00 am in the Treherne United Church with Heather Grobb officiating.  Interment will take place in the Bethel Cemetery.
