Passed away at the Tiger Hills Personal Care Home on Tuesday February 1, 2022 at the age of 94 years, Remy Arthur Cabernel, of Holland, MB.

Remy was born in Bruxelles, MB, on June 4th, 1927 to Alois & Laura Cabernel.  He was the youngest of four boys and grew up on the Cabernel homestead just outside of Bruxelles.

He met Angele Hutlet in 1957 and rumor has it that he “stole” Angele’s watch and told her he will give her the watch back if she would go to the show with him that evening.  Well, she must have gone to the show, as they married the following year, on October 28th, 1958.

Remy & Angele raised a family of three children, Louis (1960), Agnes (1962) and Hubert (1968).  They lived on the Desrosiers farm until 1963 when they moved ¼ of a mile to the Verniest farm, which is now where Louis & Linda Cabernel currently live.

In 1989, they moved to Holland, MB and lived in their house on Patrick Street until February 2021.  They moved into the Manor together, but Remy fell ill, went to the hospital in Treherne, was transferred to Cartwright Care Home for a few months, and finally back to Treherne, where he passed away.

Remy & Angele enjoyed taking many many bus tours.  Places they went were to Alaska, Nashville, Florida, California, Nova Scotia, Europe….. just to name a few.

Remy’s highlight was the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin, MB.  He would come all four days with his Blue Cooler filled with his lunch and “beverages”.  He participated in the parade all four days and would waive every single time to the crowds, think he felt like a KING.

Another one of his favorites, was the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag, MN.  Not a very big town, but the steam show there was HUGE.  He enjoyed watching their parade, as his son Hubert was on one of the Steamers and then he would enjoy a good visit with his American friends.

Remi enjoyed a good game of Bien and was quite good at it too.  He played with numerous friends and with his children & spouses.  He had quite a wicked sense of humor, some appropriate and some inappropriate – would make us laugh quite a bit.

His favorite past time was “happy hour” with his children, grandchildren, his neighbors and anyone that came to visit, pretty much up until he moved to the care home.  Christmas was his favorite time of the year, as he knew his gifts (bottles) would last him a good 6 months or so.  Remy/Dad was always willing to lend a hand with his children, especially during harvest season.

Remy, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, you will be missed more than words can say.  No words can even be said to come close to describing how much we loved you.

Remy leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Angele (nee Hutlet), children Louis (Linda) Cabernel of Bruxelles, MB, Agnes (Ken) Harpelle of Cypress River, MB, Hubert (Diane) Cabernel of La Salle, MB, seven grandchildren Rebecca (Jerome), Ian (Jessica), Robyn (Eric), Leah (Jordan), Nicole (Keith), Kimberly (Jon), Allison (Ty);  thirteen great grandchildren Austin, Tori, Kara, Kayla, Avery, Maisy, Shay, Alfred, Alex, Angela, Heidi, Abby & Madison, as well as numerous extended relatives & friends.

Remy was predeceased by his parents Alois & Laura Cabernel and by brothers Marcel (Julia), Gaston (Therese), Albert (Adele) and his brother-in-law Alexandre Hutlet.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday February 5, 2022, at 2:00 pm in the St. John Berchmans Catholic Church, Holland, MB, with Father Joseph Tran as Celebrant.  Interment will take place in the St. John Berchmans Parish Cemetery.
